HAPPY BUCKS:

Sandee Macht for the CPA’s Friday lunch event at the Masonic Lodge.

Pastyor nancy Carmichael who was in River Falls and met the person who was awarded her husband memorial scholarship.  And Monday am when the scholarship committee picked the finalists and her promotion in her physical therapy class.

Sue Johnson whose daughter Faith is entred in the Fort Art Show.

Paul Novitzke for the clean up at the car show going good and he evidently didn’t give enough money last week with his comment for good weather over the weekend.

Birthdays celebrated today for Toby Tully Jr. and Tom Moore.

 

President Macht reminded everyone that the Top 10 banquets are the next two weeks and Rotarians should arrive a little earlier so we can greet the parents and students.

 

Steve Lewis reminded everyone about the Brat & Burger on August 17^th and so start soliciting prizes for the raffle and auction.  Also May 16^th will be Rotary Park clean up day.

 

Dr. Meyers stated Colonel Pay Volk will be the speaker next week and the following week will be Kay Sparling for the Top 10 banquets.

 

Business meeting was held today. Scholarship recipients have been selected. 

Tree dedication for Denis Weidenhoeft will be sometime in June.

We will be a sponsor for PADA’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event this weekend, they will advertise our beer tasting event.

Jackie Myers picks up money from the 12 boxes around town for the Rotary/Jefferson Literacy Council.  Do we want to increase this to more businesses or leave as is.

We very much appreciate this partnership with Rotary.  Through your club’s efforts, JCLC has received almost $650 in less than a year.  If this could be increased by the number of locations and because it is being done in other communities as well, it could keep some sustainable funding coming into the JCLC each year.

Paul Novitzke spoke about a fundraising opportunity for the Rotary Club at the fair selling wrist bands @ $ .50 a piece which Rotary would keep and/or serving beer.  If you’re interested in doing this email President Macht and let her know.  This will fill up quickly and needs to be in place by the end of May.  Fair is the week of July 8-12^th.

Paul Novitzke was inducted today as the newest Rotarian in the world.

 

Pastor Nancy proposed giving each student something that tells about Rotary at the top ten banquet. Something for next year as not enough time to get this done.

Student Rotarians here today: Zak Wellnitz and Steve Winter who thanked Rotary for having them.  They shared their plans for college, meeting business leaders in the community and of course their great comments about the food.

Gary Thompson for his taxes being done, and his comments that followed named two horses that are running in the Kentucky Derby on May 2^nd.   Which none of us picked up on.

Beer tasting event. Sue asked everyone to let her know how many tickets they’ve sold for this event by next Tuesday so she can order the beer and food.  A sign up sheet is going around for help on May 2^nd.  If you have tickets email Sue how many you’ve sold if you haven’t turned in the money yet. 

The Daily Union will be doing an article on this also.

 

Steve Lewis spoke on Earth Day and the award he received from UW WI for being a Sustainable Business/Person.  Conserving is what we all need to do to help to keep us all sustainable.  They handed out a sheet with several questions regarding Earth Day-we all learned a little today.

Pastor Nancy Carmichael- Immanuel United Methodist Church will have May Day bouquets available for purchase on May lst for $10, they will deliver or you can pick up-proceeds go to the roof fund.

Sue Johnson spent a couple days with her children and saw the Hannah Montana movie.

Pat Vandenberg had a great trip to Phoenix & Las Vegas and his son is married.

Steve Lehmann had a wonderful time at St. John’s.

Paul Notvitzke has one for hopefully becoming a member and an extra one to help things along.

Toby Tully Jr for his wife having a successful appendectomy on Sunday.

Steve Lewis for everyone who has covered him in the past.

Janet Werner for their granddaughter Lauren who is celebrating her golden birthday today.

HAPPY BUCKS:

Mike Swartz for the three men introduced today who are great ambassadors.  For the JHS play held this past weekend which was fantastic which Del’s daughter played a part and did an excellent job-Mike assumed she got her talent from her Mother-that dollar went for a fine. And for Gary Thompson winning the election and being his boss.

Shirley Dempsey for her garage being cleaned which actually looks like a garage now.

Del Chmielewski who did part of the planning for the cast party.

Gary Thompson for his success in both areas for election to the school board and now he’ll be able to keep Mike’s wages down.

Pastor Nancy for Easter week and she has three garages not cleaned which she will be getting help with shortly and she is on her fifth dumpster and she is now on the “frequent dumpster rate.”

Jackie Myers for her son receiving some recognition at law school.

Del Chmielewski-he was thinking about building a garage but after hearing some of the above he is now against it.

Sandee Macht for the JHS play she also attended and had a great time.

 

FINES:

No name tags on had to pay.

Tom really didn’t want to pick on Steve Lewis but Tom had three persons comment on the fact that Steve had one sock inside his jeans and one outside.

 

Jim van Lieshout had a happy buck happy to be alive.  Upon further inquiry we all learned Jim fell down 13 steps at Fidelity on Tuesday.

Del Chmielewski then shared a story about Bob Martin who missed a step and flipped off a pier into the water. Del got quite a chuckle out of it.

 

Sandee reminded everyone about our June banquet coming up and nominating someone for the Outstanding Achievement Award-Non-Rotarian and the Service Above Self Award-Rotarian.  Shirley will be bringing nomination papers to the next meeting.

Sue Johnson reminded everyone to get a poster for the beer drinking event and tickets.

 

Program:

Janet Werner introduced Paul Novitzke-Jefferson County Fair Park Manager who shared his role and what the county wants him to accomplish in the next three years to keep the fair park viable and self sustaining.

Paul has stated he would like to join Rotary, any comments please submit to Sandee Macht.

Tom Moore for his basement being redone after flooding a few weeks ago, it is now a “Man Cave.”

Pat Vandenberg leaving for Phoenix next week and then to Las Vegas for his son’s wedding.

David Olsen for his daughter getting her drivers license.

Jim van Lieshout for the $500 +$85 paid out for car damages and to let David Olsen know what he’s in for.

 

FINES:  Anyone not having a name tag on was fined.  Anyone wearing a jogging suit.  Pastor Nancy’s comment.

 

Sue Johnson spoke about the beer tasting event on May 2^nd 2-6pm, sign up sheet will be going around next week.  Posters will be done this week.  Still looking for table sponsors.  See Sue for tickets.

 

Rotary Scholarship guidelines were presented.  A motion to accept the guidelines was made and seconded, motion carried.

10 – Minute Membership Energizer

 

The purpose of the membership committee is to develop and implement a plan for recruitment and retention of members.

 

Qualifications for Membership

 

·         Be an adult of good character

·         Hold (or be retired from) a professional, managerial, or community position

·         Have demonstrated a commitment to service through personal involvement

·         Be able to meet the club’s weekly attendance or community project requirements

·         Live or work within the vicinity of the club or surrounding area

 

Responsibilities of Membership

 

·         Members are expected to attend weekly meetings.  They must pay annual dues to their clubs, their district, and rotary international.  And they’re expected to participate in local or international Rotary club activities or projects.

 

Attendance Requirements

 

·         An attendance record of 50% is required to remain an active Rotarian.  Make-ups of missed meetings should be done within two weeks of the missed meeting.

 

2 Types of Membership

 

·         Active, most of us in the club fit this category, pay the dues, pay for meals whether your at the meeting or not, and have voting rights.

 

·         Honorary, we currently have none.  This would be like a university giving someone an honorary degree.  They don’t pay dues, don’t pay meals, no voting rights.

 

·         Sr. Active is no longer a membership classification recognized by Rotary International.  We have a couple in our club that have been “grandfathered” in where they pay their dues each quarter but only pay for the meals for the meetings they attend.  This may be something that our District may request our Board to look into in the future.

 

·         For a Leave of Absence, a member must submit a written application to the board setting forth good and sufficient cause, to excuse a member from missing meetings for a specified length of time.

 

Fees for Membership

 

·         Dues are billed quarterly at about $142.25 per quarter.  Which totals $569.00 per year.  The breakdown is as follows each quarter:  $15.00 to Rotary International, $10.50 for local dues, $6.25 for Presidential dues, and $110.50 for meals.  Included in our dues, each member receives a subscription to the Rotary International magazine.

 

The Membership Process

 

·         Finding new members:  Friends, Family, Business Contacts, New & Existing Businesses, your place of worship.

 

·         Invite a prospective member to a club meeting.  Explain a little about Rotary, our projects, how much it costs, and answer any questions they may have.

 

·         Follow up after they’ve attended a meeting.  See if they would like to come to another meeting and if they’ve thought about becoming a member.

 

·         Induction Ceremony by the board.  Welcome them to the club, maybe we could invite the new member’s significant other or family members to attend the induction ceremony.

 

·         Keep new members interested in the club.  Assign a mentor so new members don’t get lost in the shuffle.  Get them excited about club events and explain the responsibilities involved.  Hold a fireside chat.

 

Retention Strategies for Existing Membership

 

·         Encourage members to visit other clubs.  Have good programs.  Call members who miss 3 meetings in a row.  Ask for feedback from members.  Fun leads to member retention.  Maybe have a social hour every other month.  Shake up club meetings, maybe have a couple meetings outdoors in the summer at Rotary Park.

 

·         All members are encouraged to look for new members.

 

Why Rotarians drop their membership

 

·         Inadequate orientation of the new member, cliques in the club, no club participation in club activities or projects.

RYLA-2 students have been chosen to attend.

Scholarship applicants-19 were received, committee will be meeting to select the recipients.  Rotary Scholarship guidelines will be discussed at the April lst meeting and a vote will be taken.

There are some April dates open for speakers.

May- Top 10 8^th grade and seniors speakers are confirmed and invites have been sent.

Board went through items which were brought from Meadow Springs to second floor storage room.

Pastor Nancy Carmichael for the cruise she went on with her Mom and daughter and the performance she attended at Whitewater on Tuesday.  Women of the Bible to be held on April 2^nd at 7pm at United Methodist Church.

Avind Shah for his trip to India and another successful eye camp.

President Macht introduced Ed Smith from the Stoughton Rotary and he is also District Treasurer.  Ed’s niece Sandy is on the Space Station since mid November.  She is a flight engineer.  She will be returning home from the Space Station later this month.  Very interesting program.

Sue Johnson spoke about the Paul Harris award, and Every Rotarian, Every Year.  Only $100 a year from each Rotarian can fund a lot of items in different countries to make life easier and to educate the children and adults.

Today we honored three people who have achieved their Paul Harris awards-Del Chmielewski for his 2^nd one, Sandee Macht for her 4^th level award, and Shirley Dempsey for her first Paul Harris.  Sandee read off the names of all the Paul Harris fellows in our club who were asked to stand.  Also named were the current participants in the Every Rotarian, Every Year program.

Del Chmielewski thanked Sue for the good job she did as Assistant District Governor.

Reference was made to the Bequest Society if someone wants to give a larger amount like $10,000, let Mike Swartz now so he can put in his report.

Sandee asked the board to stay a few minutes.  Decision to continue to have meetings in the Puerner Room through May.  Pat will let Bon Ton know this.

HAPPY BUCKS:

Colleen Locke for the stray dog who found their family about a week ago and if anyone wants him to let her know.  Also for the quilt she was making for the Brat & Burger Raffle which she finished last weekend.

 

Program:  Sharon Weber-Youth Librarian told us about the upcoming summer reading program “Be Creative” and what she does and how the program has grown over the years drawing people from outside of Jefferson.  Sharon also spoke of the need for monetary help to help pay for books and programs as the city funding was cut this year also.  Sharon stated she has a great time with the children ages 0-high school age and has a lot fun doing it.  She showed some of the items they work with.

 

February birthdays were observed-Happy Birthday Jim van Lieshout.

Sue Johnson shared that one of the clubs she has visited instead of giving a mug or pen to the guest speaker donates a book to the library in the speakers name.

President Elect Mike Swartz welcomed everyone and led us in the pledge.

Student Rotarians  February Student Rotarians are: Taylor Linse and Travis McDermott each spoke about their college plans. They both enjoyed the presentations at Rotary and the great food. 

Visiting Rotarian: Bob Cheek-Fort Rotary Club and Doug Dewey–District Exec. for Southern Lakes District Boy Scouts of America.

 

HAPPY BUCKS:

Del Chmielewski for the Jefferson girls basketball team which won against Lake Mills last night by 12 points and Jefferson will play at Columbus, the number one team in the state on Thursday.

Pastor Nancy Carmichael who was the UW-Madison and saw Catlin Gibson play in her last game as a senior on Sunday.  Also for the Caribbean cruise she will be taking with her Mother and daughter.

Jim van Liehoust for a Platteville comment to Travis, thanks to Bon Ton for the great meal and FCCU for the use of the room.

Steve Lehmann is glad his neighbor is back home and he didn’t have to shovel snow for him.

Dr. Volk for his Wyoming snowmobile trip in the mountains.

Shirley Dempsey for Mike and Sandy taking her to the fundraiser at the hospital on Saturday night.

Program:  Sue Johnson presented the scholarship guidelines the committee had set up and asked for input.  Lots of input, some like limits, others didn’t.  Include board has to approve the dollar amount to be given in the proposed budget by the Pres. Elect.  Clubs ability to what the club can give each year.  Technical college not listed here but Sue stated it was included.  Application states one applicant for a technical college will receive a scholarship, this maybe needs to be changed that it doesn’t say “one”.  Recommended the committee meet again to tweak the comments and bring back to the membership.

We will be meeting at the Puerner Room through the end of March.

Mike Swartz reminded everyone about the raffle tickets the CPA is selling for a two week stay in Hawaii.
